Dad - Complete Series 1

DVD - contains all 6 episodes

A generation-gap comedy that contrasted the relationship of Alan Hook and his father Brian, and Alan's relationship with his own son, Vincent.

Brian Hook (played by George Cole) is a well-meaning chap but his values, habits, likes and dislikes were developed in the 1950s and his outlook and personality clash badly with his son's. They had drifted apart for many years but Brian's recent illness has brought them close again, and Alan sees this as a second chance to really get to know his father, despite the fact that Dad tends to drives him mad. Vincent, meanwhile, is a bright enough typical teenager, who feels as distant from Alan as Alan does from Brian.

These mirror-image, cross-generation clashes formed the central basis of Dad. Cole was in fine form once more as the solid senior citizen set in his ways, and McNally ably suggested the mixed emotions confusing his character. Julia Hills (who had appeared in Marshall's 2 Point 4 Children had little to do as Alan's wife but turned in her usual winning performance all the same.
